Born in St. Marc, Haiti, Garcelle Beauvais enjoyed a "perfectly normal" childhood with her four older sisters and two older brothers. At the age of seven, she and her family immigrated to the U.S. so that her mother could attend nursing school.
With French and Creole as her native languages, Garcelle learned English by watching Sesame Street. She also endured the culture shock that came with being the only black student in her new elementary school. At the age of sixteen, she and her family left the freezing temperatures of Massachusetts for the warmer climate of Miami, Florida.
Encouraged by family and friends, Garcelle began modeling at age seventeen. She signed with Ford Models in New York and appeared in magazine layouts for Avon, Clairol and Mary Kay Cosmetics. She has also graced the pages of Ebony and Essence magazines and the runways for designers Calvin Klein and Isaac Mizrahi.
In 1991, Garcelle moved to Los Angeles to launch an acting career. Her big break came after a dream inspired her to write producer Aaron Spelling. She was quickly cast in his series, Models, Inc. She recently completed a five-year run in the hit sitcom, The Jamie Foxx Show, on which she played Foxx's love interest.
Her film credits include Double Take, in which she stars opposite Eddie Griffin and Orlando Jones, and the cable movie Second String.
When not in front of the camera, Garcelle's active life includes raising her son, Oliver, and working out by playing tennis, volleyball and doing Pilates. She also recently completed filming the Disney/Touchstone feature Black Sheep, opposite Chris Rock and Anthony Hopkins, for director Joel Schumacher.
Beauvais-Nilon resides in Los Angeles with her husband, Mike Nilon, her son, Oliver, and golden retriever Shadow.
