Alfre Woodard was born Tulsa, Oklahoma. She is the youngest of three children. She is former high school cheerleader and track star, she got the acting bug after being pursuaded to audition for a school play. She went on to study acting at Boston University and enjoyed a brief stint on Broadway before moving to LA. She got her first break in Remember My Name which also starred Jeff Goldblum. She was named one of the Most Beautiful People in America by People Magazine.
She is a versatile actress just beginning to achieve mainstream recognition after many years of working on stage, in TV, and, since 1978, in movies. She made her film debut in Alan Rudolph's Remember My Name (1978), and later appeared in Robert Altman's H.E.A.L.T.H (1979) before receiving an Oscar nomination for her performance in Cross Creek (1983), as a servant to writer Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings. She has since appeared in Go Tell It on the Mountain (1984), Extremities (1986), Scrooged (1988), Miss Firecracker (1989, a charming role in this underrated film), Grand Canyon (1991), and Rich in Love (1993). With a seemingly limitless emotional range, she has found steady work on television; she was a regular on the short-lived "Sara" (1985), won Emmys for her appearances on "Hill Street Blues" and "L.A. Law," and received an ACE award for her portrayal of Winnie Mandela in the cable TV movie Mandela (1987). John Sayles gave her a strong costarring role in Passion Fish (1992) as a Woman with a troubled past who's hired to take care of a woman with a troubled present, Mary McDonnell. She's been consistently good in such other films as The Gun in Betty Lou's Handbag (1992), Heart and Souls, Bopha! (both 1993), and Spike Lee's Crooklyn (1994).
